Innovative Hiring Strategies
Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008Why does advertising strategy differ when selling products and recruiting talent? Doesn’t recruitment of talent involve selling of the company’s brand name so that a large number of prospective candidates are attracted to apply for post? TESCO, which set shop in 2004, decided to brand its organisation before going to prospective candidates with recruitment opportunities.
Thanks to the talent crunch being faced by hiring managers in almost every growing industry, such innovative strategies are fast making inroads.
“The hiring scenario has witnessed dramatic changes in the past decade with companies facing increasing talent crunch. This is also because new sectors such as retail have come on the horizon. While the number of people joining the workforce is aplenty, “employable” brains are in short supply.”
In view of the challenges on the manpower front, most companies have reworked their hiring strategies. Referral is another great hiring tool at the hands of the hiring managers. With zero to little expenses to incur, they can get references from employees of employable talent. If these references are limited, hiring managers can also take help from Referral Recruitment Portals like Yellojobs.com. What makes these referral recruitment portals special is the access to passive talent base - Jobs are advertised online. Networkers can refer friends and relatives to these jobs. Employers just have to spend a minimum of Rs.5000 to use this excellent hiring technique.
“Job fairs, online talent auctions, and talent referral programs, job sites, walk-in tours of employer campuses are just some of the popular means to bring home the best”, says Monisha Advani, MD, Randstad India.

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008While reports of cost cutting emerge from the dark horse of India Inc., US based IT firms have increased the referral bonus for existing employees. Deloitte, ADP, Pegasystems and Broadridge are increasingly using increased referral bonuses to attract talent. This means that existing employees can earn bigger amounts by referring friends or relatives to jobs within these companies. This also means that hiring is still on.
“This is the right time to hire as salary expectations of people have become realistic and referral system helps identify suitable people. Besides, expansion of India operations will help the company cut cost significantly and mitigate the risk of the US slowdown ,” said an industry analyst explaining the hike in referral fees.

Job referrals: New hiring mantra
Wednesday, November 26th, 2008While campus recruitment continues to be the dominant mode of recruitment, IT/ITeS companies have substantially ramped up hiring through employee referrals and internal promotions. While 40 per cent of the hiring is through referrals, more than 80 per cent of promotions are internal. Thanks to the financial crisis, hiring has slowed down. The slowdown has also led organisations to take stock of the situation and restructure their working conditions. The hiring plans in the IT/ITeS have been attracting much attention, since they are associated with massive hiring of fresh talent.

No slowdown in recruitments at BPOs
Monday, November 17th, 2008The economy may have slowed down, but not recruitments, particularly in domestic BPOs, which have continued to stave off the pressure from tumbling I-banks, plummeting Sensex and Rupee-Dollar imbalance. And as Vikramjit Singh Sahaye of referral recruitment network Yellojobs.com India puts it “domestic BPOs have not been hit as the sectors (telecom, retail, etc.) they cater to are not doing too badly”. Therefore, industry experts say that despite the slowdown, the workforce at domestic BPOs will increase by at least 30-40% in the future.
